Family holidays are full of magical moments, as you watch their first steps in the sand or the sheer excitement on their faces as they take their first paddle in the sea. Devon has all ingredients for the perfect holiday for all the family - the Great Outdoors, beautiful beaches for sandcastles and rock pooling and plenty of fresh air...

In addition to the many natural attractions on offer, there is also plenty to entertain, whatever the weather. Families with young children will be well catered for in the area as most villages have play areas or parks nearby. There are lots of activities and sports to enjoy, see Sports and Watersports information, as well lovely outdoor swimming pools at Topsham and Exeter.

Here are a few of our suggestions:

Fossil hunting at Charmouth beach and all along the Jurassic Coast.

Powderham Castle is located picturesque and unquie setting beside the Exe estuary. Six hundred years of history are contained within the walls of one of England's oldest family homes, this and a whole range of other exciting activities and events makes it a 'must see' for everyone visting Devon on holiday.

Children can let their imaginations run wild in the brand new Courtenay Fort. The Fort spans 21m, with a central turret 4.2m high, a suspension bridge, nets, parallel bars, climbing wall, monkey bars, slide and many other exciting features, and is a perfect play area for the under-12's.

The BIG Sheep - is north Devon's premier all weather family attraction with a whole host of indoor and outdoor activities. Situated on the North Devon coast just off the A39 Atlantic Highway two miles west of Bideford. View Google map

Exmoor Zoo is a unique and unusual zoo with a wide variety of animals, when you visit make sure you see 'The Exmoor Beast' a beautiful black Leopard one of only 5 left in captivity in the UK. This zoo is a great family day out

Go Ape! at Haldon Forest, near Exeter. Climb trees and slide across high wires,crawl through tunnels, cross rope bridges, walk the planks and zip down to the ground. It so much fun and a great day out.

Bicton Park Botanical Gardens has beautiful botanical gardens and stunning grounds, plus play areas and a train to amuse the little ones. They are open all year round and host lots events through out the year, look at our news pages for up to date events information. Map

Stuart Line Cruises offer a wide selection of boat trips departing from, Topsham, Exmouth and Sidmouth. They offen have special event trips and can provide private charter fishing trips too. Visit there website for departure times and prices.

Paignton Zoo is a fantastic day out for all the family, animal lovers will be well catered for with a wide range of wildlife on offer including; elephants, giraffes, monkeys, lions, tigers and many many more.

Plymouth National Aquarium, is largest aquarium in the UK with 4000 animals from 400 species to keep everyone captivated. Having a shark swim over you head in the 2.5 million litre tank is fantastic! This is a great day out rain or shine.

Pennywell Farm is a great family day out with lots of different activities, which start every half an hour through out the day. The farm has activities ranging from; quad bikes, go-karts & train rides to eagles, owls and reindeer and much much more. There is enough to keep all the children captivated! 

The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth has long been a big hit with the whole family - young and old. You can meet the donkeys in person, 365 days a year as the sanctuary is open all year round and has free admission and free parking. Dogs are welcome too! The charity is working worldwide to improve conditions for donkeys & mules. 

Bob The Builder fans will love Diggerland at Cullompton - a unique adventure park where children (and adults) can drive real diggers!

If the weather's wet, why not head to the nearby Cathedral City of Exeter where the shops, leisure centres and cinemas will keep everyone entertained. There are plenty of shopping and resturants options at the new Princess Hay shopping centre.
